More than 230 motorists gave positive tests in December's drink and drug driving campaign in Avon and Somerset, police say.

During the month, 11,984 motorists were stopped and 1,771 were given breath or drug tests, with 231 positive results.

During the same period in 2010, only 150 people were arrested for similar offences after more than 28,000 were stopped for roadside checks.

Ch Insp John Holt said the force took drink and drug driving "seriously".

"Our message remains the same - don't drink and drive," he said.

"We would also like to take this opportunity to praise the majority of drivers who have listened to advice to leave the car behind."
