A garden shed in Somerset has won the Shed of the Year prize after being used as a music venue for online gigs.

Jon Earl, from Clevedon won the accolade after impressing judges with the "unusual use" of his building.

He turned his shed into a music venue two years ago and set up a Songs From The Shed website inviting musicians to record songs and videos there.

Mr Earl said: "We've had over a 150 acts play in here, 350,000 views from people all over the world."

Those acts have included a 26-strong gospel choir and bands from the United States, Holland, Italy and Australia.

For the performances, he uses a hand-held recorder to make music videos in the 12ft by 10ft shed which are then uploaded on to his website and YouTube for people to watch as the shed is too small to hold an audience.

Sarah Beeny, one of the judges in the competition, said: "This is what a shed should be - full of interesting things that you're not quite sure what you'll ever do with."

Mr Earl has said he will use the £1,000 prize money from a wood preservative company to spruce up his shed, after admitting it had a "bit of a woodworm problem".
