Midsomer Norton Library will be closed for at least a month after burst pipes flooded the building during the Christmas closure.

It was due to reopen on 30 December but instead staff were faced with inches of flood water.

About 300 books worth £4,000 were destroyed and need to be replaced, as do the carpet and furniture.

Julia Burton, from Bath and North East Somerset Council's library service, said it could have been a lot worse.

A spokesman for the council said the overall cost of the damage was not yet known.

While the library is closed, Radstock Library will extend its opening hours.

Unlike other libraries in Somerset, Midsomer Norton's library is not under threat from closure.
