Cyclist in Yeovil shot in leg with air rifle

A man was shot in the leg with an air rifle as he cycled on a path in a Somerset town.

The 44-year-old was travelling between the Bowlplex car park and Summerhouse View in Yeovil on Thursday afternoon when he was injured.

He told officers he had seen three people in nearby trees, one of whom had appeared to have an air rifle with a telescopic sight.

The man told police he had heard a "popping noise" then felt knee pain.

'Get in touch'

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said he had suffered a slight cut.

Sgt Paul Hayward said: "The consequences of such a stupid act could have been very serious - an accidental shot to the head could result in permanent damage to an eye.

"Only one male fired the weapon from the group of three present. I would urge the other two to get in touch, to help us take this weapon off the streets."

He also asked parents to keep an eye on children and young adults who possessed air rifles.
