Two killed in car fire on M5 in Somerset

A man and woman have died after the car they were travelling in caught fire on the M5 near Bridgwater, Somerset.

The motorway was closed southbound after the crash, which happened near junction 23 at about 1930 BST on Friday evening.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said it was believed the white Citroen BX may have been travelling slowly or was stationary prior to the incident.

The southbound carriageway reopened at 0200 BST on Saturday.

A police spokesman said: "The vehicle ended up on the hard shoulder. The Citroen driver and passenger died from their injuries.

"An investigation into the circumstances of the accident is ongoing."

Anyone who saw the incident has been asked to contact police.
