Lawley primary school backed by planners

A new £4.7m primary school is to be built in Telford after plans were approved by the local authority.

The academy, on Martingale Way, Lawley, is expected to cater for 210 pupils and open in September 2015.

It is designed to meet the needs of the nearby Ironstone housing development, which will see 3,300 homes built over the next few years.

Telford and Wrekin Council said the primary school could eventually cater for about 420 pupils.

The plans include a playing field and community facilities.

The council said Lawley Primary and Newdale Primary schools had been extended to cope with demand, but a new school would be needed as more homes were built.

The plans had been opposed by Lawley Parish Council, in part due to concerns over parking, access and community facilities.

They were, however, approved by Telford and Wrekin Council, subject to certain conditions.
