Man dies after police pursuit crash on A5 in Atcham
A man has died in a crash involving a stolen car following a police chase, officers said.
West Mercia Police said the driver, in his 20s, was confirmed dead at the scene, near Atcham.
A 19-year-old man, who was also in the car, suffered life-changing injuries and was taken to hospital.
The crash happened at 02:15 BST. Six hours later, a second crash occurred. The two accidents caused major tailbacks.'Crashed into lamppost'
Police said the car in the first accident, a red Vauxhall Corsa, was reported as stolen in a burglary in Craven Arms at around 02:00.
West Mercia Police followed it and said it left the road and crashed into a lamppost.
The driver escaped the car wreck but suffered a heart attack at the side of the road.
The force has now referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
The A5 was closed for the scene to be examined.
At 08:00, a lorry, four cars and a van crashed by junction seven for the M54.
A three-year-old and an adult were injured. The accident caused tailbacks that lasted more than six hours.
BBC Radio Shropshire reported the traffic did not move for two hours.
