The case against a former landlord accused of staging a burglary at his own pub has collapsed on the first day of his trial.

At Shrewsbury Crown Court, John Cattermole, 55, was cleared of burglary and perverting the course of justice.

He had denied stealing £2,800 in cash and spirits worth £1,500 from the Monkmoor Hotel in Shrewsbury.

Prosecutors told the court there was no reasonable prospect of a securing a conviction and he was found not guilty.

Mr Cattermole said intruders had used an empty beer keg to enter the pub through a window.

Police issued a Crimewatch appeal after Mr Cattermole was arrested in April 2010 but later failed to answer bail.
