Work has started on a £1.5m expansion of a business park which Shropshire council has said could lead to 600 jobs being created.

It said new office developments were being built on six acres of land at Shrewsbury Business park.

Permission has already been granted for developer Alaska to build 161,000 sq ft (15,000 sq m) of office space and shops.

Work is expected to be completed in spring 2014, the council said.

The development could lead to £13m of private sector investment, the authority added.

Cabinet member for business growth, Steve Charmley, said: "Investing £1.5m in this work is a great vote of confidence in the development of Shrewsbury Business Park, and the future economic development of Shrewsbury and Shropshire."

Alaska has previously said the jobs would be created in a variety of sectors and would inject "much-needed cash into the local community".
