A former pub landlord who has been on the run for three years has handed himself in to police after an appeal on BBC One's Crimewatch programme.

John Cattermole, 54, was held by police in 2010, suspected of faking a break-in at Shrewsbury's Monkmoor Hotel.

He has been hunted by officers after failing to answer bail in May 2010.

He walked into Shrewsbury Police Station on Wednesday and was arrested on suspicion of theft and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

West Mercia Police said he had since been released on conditional bail pending further inquiries.

The force said Mr Cattermole had initially reported £2,800 in cash had been stolen from the pub, along with £1,500 worth of spirits.

They said he claimed intruders had used an empty beer keg to get in through a window.

Earlier this month Mr Cattermole appeared on a Crimewatch appeal, which officers said had prompted some new leads.
