A pub landlord who has been on the run for three years after being arrested on suspicion of faking a burglary may be in Lancashire, police have said.

John Cattermole, 54, from Shrewsbury, was held in April 2010, hours after reporting a break-in at the Monkmoor Hotel, which he ran.

The case was featured on the BBC's Crimewatch programme last week.

Following several calls and new information police believe he may now be in the Burnley or Preston areas.

PC Jason Tierney said: "We had a good response to the appeal on Crimewatch and part of our search for Mr Cattermole is now focussed on Lancashire.

"He may still be working in the licensing trade but could be doing anything and anybody who recognises him should contact police."

Police said Mr Cattermole had initially reported £2,800 in cash had been stolen from the pub, along with £1,500 worth of spirits.

They said he claimed an empty beer keg had been used by intruders to get in through a window.

He failed to answer bail after being held on suspicion of theft and perverting the course of justice.
