Shrewsbury Flax Mill Maltings site demolition ends

The county council plans to submit bids worth about £18m for restoration work

The Flax Mill Maltings site in Shropshire is ready for possible future development following demolition work.

The silo at the site in Shrewsbury was built in the early 1960s and has not been used since the maltings closed in the late 1980s.

Three buildings were demolished in October, followed by the 24-metre tall North Silo in November.

Funding bids worth £18m are to be submitted by the county council to restore the main historic buildings.

The authority said work could begin as early as August 2013 if its bids are successful.

A bid for £11.6m is to be submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund along with a bid for £6m to the European Regional Development Fund.

Alan Mosley, chair of the friends of the Flaxmill Maltings and Shropshire councillor for Castlefields and Ditherington, said: "The works show the project is making tremendous progress and we can now see the site as the fabulous asset it will become for the community."
