Wem swimming pool needs new operators

The future of a Shropshire swimming pool is uncertain after its current operators decided to stop running it.

The facility in Wem has been run on behalf of the town council by Teme Leisure since July 2010.

But the organisation will cease its management in December, according to Wem's mayor, councillor Peter Broomhall.

Mr Broomhall said the authority was exploring a number of ways to avoid closing the pool.

He said: "We're very sorry that Teme Leisure can't currently operate the pool.

Community-run trust

"They've ceased their direct management of the pool and we're now looking into ways that we can keep the pool open because we think it is a pool that the community need.

"Two years ago when the pool was closed and we had to find another person to run the pool there was about 1,400 people that turned up at Edinburgh House wanting to keep this pool open.

"The towns people of Wem and the surrounding area really want this pool to keep open."

Mr Broomhall added that the council was looking in to the possibility of creating a community-run trust as well as working with local schools.

The BBC contacted Teme Leisure but they have yet to comment.
