Homes evacuation after suspected explosives found

About 100 properties were evacuated in Shropshire after suspected explosive materials were found when police searched a house.

A number of firearms were also found as officers executed a search warrant at a house in Leonards Close, Telford, on Saturday morning, a spokesman said.

Explosives experts were called to the scene. The homes were evacuated for up to three hours as a precautionary measure.

A man in his 40s has been arrested.

Det Ch Insp Jason Wells, from West Mercia Police, apologised to residents for the disruption, but said it was necessary for their safety.

"I'd like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding while we have dealt with this incident and can reassure them that, after thorough checks by experts, we are happy that the area is completely safe and there is no risk to the public," he said.

"We have been assisted greatly today by colleagues across the emergency services and from Telford & Wrekin Council who have all helped to ensure that this situation could be dealt with as quickly as possible and ensure that disruption to local people was minimised as far as possible."

Officers are continuing their investigations at the property.
