Man sentenced for throwing man at train in Shrewsbury

The 24-year-old man pleaded guilty to a 'violent' attack at Shrewsbury railway station

A man who threw another man against a moving train at a railway station has been given a suspended jail sentence.

Daniel Peter Worgan, 24, of Hadley Road, Oakengates, Shropshire, earlier pleaded guilty to endangering the safety of persons on the railway.

A 23-year-old man from Wigmore suffered muscle damage and other injuries in the attack at Shrewsbury station on 29 July after he hit a freight train.

A friend of the victim pulled him away from the train and platform edge.

CCTV footage helped to identify Worgan, who was arrested at the station by British Transport Police (BTP).

At Shrewsbury Crown Court on Thursday, Worgan was given a six-month suspended sentence.

'Inches from death'

He was also ordered to pay £500 compensation to his victim, who has not been identified, carry out 200 hours of unpaid work, pay prosecution costs and was put on a three-month curfew.

Speaking after the sentence, Sgt Karl Anderson of BTP Shrewsbury described the incident as a "deliberate, violent and reckless act which left the victim being inches from death".

He added: "It is clear through the injuries suffered and the trauma of the ordeal that this incident has had a substantial impact on the victim, who states afterwards he was about to die."
