A Shropshire road has been closed after part of the pavement collapsed.

A spokesman for Shropshire Council said Hazledine Way, in Shrewsbury, was closed on Sunday morning after part of it was flooded.

He said the pavement collapsed at the pedestrian crossing point at the exit from Meole Brace roundabout. It is thought a mains drain burst underneath.

The road is closed eastbound between the Meole Brace roundabout and Pritchard Way.

'Investigatory work'

The spokesman said: "A large void has formed beneath the carriageway surface, and the road has been closed for safety reasons."

He added "investigatory work" will be carried out on Sunday followed by repair as soon as possible.

Traffic has been diverted from Meole Brace roundabout, eastbound along Oteley Road and Thieves Lane to Emstrey Island, via London Road to the column roundabout, and Haycock Way to Pritchard Way.

Access westbound along Hazledine Way, towards Meole Brace roundabout from Pritchard Way, remains unaffected as it is only the eastbound direction that has been closed.
