Three transport projects in Oxfordshire have been awarded nearly £11m in government funding.

The schemes to attract funding are the link road in Wantage and traffic lights at the Cutteslowe roundabout in Oxford.

A bridge will also be constructed over the London Road level crossing in Bicester.

Oxfordshire County Council's David Nimmo Smith said funding for the schemes, set to be completed by March 2017, was "absolutely excellent news".

He said Oxford, Wantage, and Bicester would remain "open for business" during the works.

A scheme in Bicester is designed to alleviate the expected increase in train traffic following the introduction of Oxford-Marylebone and Oxford-Bedford services.

Department of Transport funding

  • Wantage Eastern Link Road £3.8m (approx)
  • Cutteslowe Roundabout £4.8m (approx)
  • Bicester London Road £2.3m

Meanwhile plans for Wantage centre around a road that will provide links to new housing in the north east of the town, new developments in Grove, and Science Vale UK.

Both town projects still require funding from other sources to cover costs.

Dave Bray said that as the cooling towers were predominantly made of wood "there is that possibility that the cooling towers will fall down on top of the firefighters".

He added: "We have extinguished the fire although there are hot spots that are remaining within the structure. We now face the challenge of getting to these and dampening them down."

Hinksey Hill congestion 08:49: Sara Dumbell Travel presenter, BBC Radio Oxford

All routes, including the A34 both ways, approaching the Hinskey Hill Interchange are very congested.

And there's the usual heavy traffic on the Oxford Ring Road Southern Bypass between Hinksey and Heyford Hill - both ways through the contraflow.

The closure of Abingdon Road between the Kennignton Roudnabout and Redbridge Park and Ride as part of those works means there's heavy traffic diverting along the Iffley Road and Donnington Bridge both ways.
