Upper Heyford Cold War airbase picked to house artefacts

3 September 2013 Last updated at 18:15 BST

A former American airbase in Oxfordshire has been selected to house some of Britain's most valuable artefacts.

Rare collections are being stored at Upper Heyford in adapted hangars.

Among them are some of 19th century physicist Michael Faraday's original test equipment.

The hangars have concrete walls thick enough to withstand a 1,000lb demolition bomb.

Thousands of American service personnel lived and worked at the airbase during the Cold War.
