A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a death at a house in Portsmouth.

Police arrived at the terraced home on Seagrove Road, in North End, on Saturday afternoon after reports of a man's body inside.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Officers said it appeared he had been assaulted before he died.

A 39-year-old man from Hampshire was arrested at the scene and is being questioned on suspicion of murder.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place to find out how the man died.

Det Supt Kath Barnes, of Hampshire Constabulary, said officers were "in the early stages of enquiries to identify the victim and inform next-of-kin".

She added that part of the road had been sealed off for a forensic examination.

"We will try to keep any disruption to a minimum as a number of officers continue working in the Seagrove Road area this weekend.

"There is no information to suggest a wider risk to the community from this crime.

"Officers are conducting house-to-house enquiries to gather information about the events leading up to the police attendance in Seagrove Road.

"I'd like to thank local residents for their co-operation and assistance with the investigation so far."
