Basingstoke wood investigated after 'human remains' found

The discovery of what is believed to be human remains in woodland in Hampshire is being investigated by police.

A member of the public alerted officers after finding the remains off Basing Road, Old Basing, Basingstoke, at 14:30 GMT on Wednesday.

Hampshire Constabulary's Major Investigation Team is investigating but say there is no risk to the public.

Police have said the death was "not necessarily suspicious" but added the body had been there "some time".

Det Insp Dave Brown, senior investigating officer, said: "We are in very early stages of this investigation and are examining all possible scenarios.

"Initial enquiries are likely to take some time and we have a team of dedicated specialist officers working on this case.

"The area is likely to be cordoned off for some time, but members of the local community should be reassured that there isn't any risk to the public."
