Chipping Norton mosque threat claim investigated

An alleged threat made to a landlord of a new mosque in Oxfordshire is being investigated by police.

A unit in Hitchmans Mews, Chipping Norton, was approved by West Oxfordshire District Council for use as a mosque on 4 February.

A new venue is now being sought after landlord George Wissinger said he had received a threat that it would be "burnt down".

Police are investigating, although no formal complaint has been made.

A police spokesman said: "Thames Valley Police is investigating a phone call made to a premises in Chipping Norton between 2 and 4 February, which was alleged to be threatening in nature.

"No formal complaint has been made to police but the incident is being treated as a potential criminal offence and is being investigated."

Objections were received over transport and fire safety over the shop venue plan and Chipping Norton Town Council had opposed the proposal.
