Man in court charged with Oxford funeral stabbing

A man has appeared in court charged over a stabbing at a funeral in Oxford.

John Mongan, 41, of Middle Ground, Wheatley, faced magistrates in the city, charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.

Thames Valley Police said officers were called to a disturbance at Greyfriars Church on Iffley Road, on 13 November.

A 31-year-old man suffered a "superficial neck injury" and was treated in hospital, police said.

Brother Thomas More described the service for Winnie Joyce at the 200-capacity church as "noisy" and "packed".

Police at the scene had to calm tensions.

Mr Mongan is due to appear at Oxford Crown Court on 26 November.
