Police guard at Oxford council meeting after threat made

Police will guard an Oxford planning meeting after a threat was made to council staff earlier this month.

Officers will be drafted in to protect councillors as they decide on the plan to build student flats on part of St Clement's car park, on Friday.

The move comes after a "very angry" man made threats to a Town Hall receptionist earlier this month about the scheme, the city council confirmed.

Police say they will attend to ensure the meeting "runs without incident".

A city council spokeswoman said: "About two weeks ago a man came into the Town Hall and made a threat against reception staff.

"The man became very angry about the St Clement's planning application and used threatening words and behaviour.

"The incident was reported to the police who are investigating the threats made."

A Thames Valley Police spokeswoman said: "There will be a police presence at the Town Hall to ensure there is no threat to security or a breach of the peace."

No arrests have been made in connection with the threat.

The plans for 140 rooms above the car park were refused at the council's west area planning committee on 15 August, on the grounds the loss of car parking facilities during the build would harm trade in the area.

But councillors will now look at amended plans which include a proposal for phased development, which would see some car parking kept on the site during the build.
