Witney schools targeted by lead thieves

Schools in west Oxfordshire are being targeted by lead thieves, police say.

The metal has been stolen from the roofs of several schools since late June.

The most recent incident took place between Tuesday and Wednesday at the West Witney Primary School at Deer Park in Edington Road.

Det Sgt Dick White, from Witney Police Station, said the thefts would have a "serious impact" on the infrastructure of schools in the area.

Also affected are Mulberry Bush School, Springfield School, Our Lady of Lourdes School, West Oxfordshire College, West Witney Primary School and Henry Box School.

Det Sgt White added: "Removing lead from roofs means that rain will get into the building causing serious damage inside.

"It will cost a lot to replace it all, in terms of money, inconvenience and disruption. It is very unsettling for our community."
