Oxford pub damaged in arson attack

Firefighters at The Bricklayers Arms Fire crews have been searching the building in case someone was trapped inside but nobody was found

Firefighters have been tackling a suspected arson attack at a pub in Oxford.

Six crews were called to The Bricklayers Arms in Old Marston shortly after 14:30 GMT.

At the height of the blaze 36 firefighters tackled the flames. Nobody is believed to have been hurt but the inside of the pub was badly damaged.

Thames Valley Police and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service will investigate how the fire was started.

David Haycock, fire service group manager, said: "Because of the spread of fire and the fact that smoke was issuing from a number of different places in the building, we have suspicions that this could have been set deliberately."

The Bricklayers Arms has been shut and boarded up for the past 12 months.
