An international women's football match between England and Sweden will take place at Oxford United's Kassam Stadium on Tuesday.

It is the last game the England side will play before the World Cup in Germany this summer.

England are currently ranked 10th in the world - Sweden are 5th.

Oxford United chairman Kelvin Thomas said: "I'm sure it will be a great occasion and we are glad to be given this opportunity."

In Oxfordshire there are currently 58 teams playing competitive football in the Oxford Mail Girls' Football League and more than 20 adult women's teams that play across the whole of the county.

Oxford University has 25 women's teams within its colleges and Oxford Brookes University also has a side.

World Cup

Vicky Bonham, the women and girl's football development officer in the county, said the England match would be a really good way to highlight what is going on in women's football in Oxfordshire.

She added: "Girls will be able to see their role models and think that one day they might be able to achieve what the England players have done."

The manager of the England team is Hope Powell.

Her side will play Mexico, New Zealand and Japan in Germany this summer. Their first game in Group B will be against Mexico in Wolfsburg on Monday 27 June.

The squad has yet to be confirmed so the game at The Kassam Stadium will be a crucial fixture before the final 21 players are named on 10 June.

Ms Powell said: "It means so much to the girls to be able to play and show their talents in front of people that appreciate them as athletes.

"It would be great if people came out and supported us for the last game before the World Cup."
