The M1 near St Albans The driver was spotted on the M1 travelling south

A van driver was arrested after motorists reported seeing a naked man driving "erratically" on the M1.

Hertfordshire police were called by concerned motorists who reported the white Ford Transit panel van.

It is alleged the driver did not stop and a police helicopter was deployed.

A 21-year-old man, from Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, was arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle without the owner's consent, dangerous driving and failing to stop.

The police were called to the southbound carriageway of the M1 on Wednesday at about 15:00 GMT.

With the help of a police helicopter, the van was followed to the North Orbital Road near the London Colney roundabout in St Albans where the man was arrested.

He has since been released on police bail.
