A Nottinghamshire schoolboy who found a 17th Century cannonball in his garden has been invited to take part in an archaeological dig.

Jack Sinclair, from Southwell, found the Civil War cannonball while digging around in his garden in May.

The 10-year-old has now been invited to a dig at Rufford Abbey Country Park.

Nottingham County Council said Jack's "amazing discovery" had made him an "ideal candidate" for the project.

The team are uncovering the foundations of a gateway, which was erected at Rufford in the 1730s.

'Feel quite special'

While 10 volunteers had to apply to join the team, Jack was invited as a special guest and says it was a great chance to take part.

He said: "I'm really interested in archaeology now and in finding stuff. I like digging around in my garden and getting muddy."

The bricks of the former gateway are underneath a pathway in the grounds of the park and there are plans to restore it.

Lorraine Horsley, Nottingham County Council archaeologist, said: "We are very passionate about what we do and to see that enthusiasm in other people is so rewarding for us.

"We would really like to put back what is lost. What we have uncovered is crumbled and has fallen apart and it would be great if we could get another wall built and then Jack and these volunteers can come back and say 'I helped find that'."
