Gunman threatens children in Newark park

Sconce Hills Park Officers have increased patrols at Sconce Hills Park, in Boundary Road

A gunman threatened children playing in a Nottinghamshire park with a replica weapon, police said.

Officers were called to Sconce Hills Park in Newark at 17:20 BST to reports of an armed man who then ran off.

A 31-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or violence. He remains in police custody.

The youngsters were unhurt and officers have increased patrols to provide reassurances, police said.

Insp Deb Regan said: "This was understandably a frightening experience for the children, and subsequently their parents.

"We have stepped up patrols in the area to provide reassurance. These will continue into the weekend."
