Cows rescued from river after Idle Valley Nature Reserve vandalism

The Lincoln red cows are used to help manage the land at the Idle Valley site

Cattle had to be rescued from a river after vandals targeted fencing at a Nottinghamshire nature reserve.

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust said the damage at the weekend to its Idle Valley Nature Reserve, near Retford, will cost them about £6,000 to repair.

One of the cows, which belonged to the organisation, was injured after coming into contact with the broken fence.

The trust said the damage was "extremely frustrating".

Charles Langtree, head of estate management at the site, said: "To have animals hurt as a result of mindless vandalism beggars belief.

"To find ourselves having to spend charitable funds meant for positive nature conservation to repair criminal damage is extremely frustrating."

The Lincoln Red cattle were brought to the Idle Valley site to graze on the land to help maintain habitats required to support bird life.

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust said police are investigating the vandalism.
