Charity ride to honour James Hodgkinson

A bike ride is being held in the memory of a Suffolk man who was killed with one punch in an attack in Nottingham.

Paramedic James Hodgkinson, 28, was in Nottingham to attend a cricket match at Trent Bridge in July 2011 when he was attacked in the city centre.

The 186-mile (296-km) bike ride will raise money for Community Service Volunteers.

The 25 cyclists left Kirton in Suffolk on Friday and will arrive in Nottingham on Sunday afternoon.

'Unprovoked attack'

Mr Hodgkinson was punched in an unprovoked attack in the Old Market Square by Jacob Dunne, 19, causing him to fall to the floor and hit his head.

He died at the Queen's Medical Centre nine days later.

Dunne admitted manslaughter at Nottingham Crown Court in October and was jailed for 30 months.

Mr Hodgkinson was a student paramedic in London where he was volunteering with CSV as a mentor to young people in care in London.

Nottinghamshire Police said three men had been killed in 2011 in attacks that involved a single punch.

A police spokesman said: "We want to promote greater awareness of the damage that throwing a punch can do.

"At worst, it can kill or can cause severe brain damage. It could also result in a significant prison sentence for the offender."
