Motorists have been warned to expect disruption as work to move underground services to accommodate the expansion of Nottingham's tram network begins.

Water connections, sewer mains and electricity services are being moved in Abbey Street and Gregory Street in Lenton to make way for new tram lines.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and consider using an alternative route if possible.

The city council said it expected the work to last for 12 months.

Project director Martin Carroll said: "We recognise this is a very busy through-route for traffic and we will do all that we can to minimise disruption while these works take place."

When complete, the tram system through Lenton, Beeston and Chilwell will allow direct travel to the region's main hospital at the Queen's Medical Centre.
