First repair for six 1840 Nottinghamshire church bells

Six bells at one of the oldest churches in Nottinghamshire have been lowered for the first time since 1840 as part of a restoration project.

The bells from St Michael's, at Averham, near Newark, will be retuned and restored at Taylor's Bell Foundry in Loughborough, Leicestershire.

Project co-ordinator Martin Cooper said each bell, weighing hundreds of kilos, had deteriorated.

He added that the £70,000 repair work would bring them up-to-date and they would hopefully be back in the church tower before Christmas.
