Mansfield Party in Park cancellation defended

The cancellation of an annual music festival has been defended by a Nottinghamshire council.

Party in the Park, a one-day event organised by Mansfield District Council, showcases local talent as well as attracting national acts.

But officials said a large number of summer events, many connected with the Olympics and Jubilee, meant Park in the Park would be rested for a year.

They felt they should do fewer things better, rather than stretch resources.

Budget pressure

The authority said it was having to allocate money to a range of other events such as the Olympic Torch visit and the new Mansfield Arts Festival.

Kate Allsop, Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration, said: "We have had to look carefully at how we can ensure these events are a success and therefore allocate our resources effectively.

"As a result we have postponed Party in the Park for this year but it will be back with a bang in 2013."

In January the council said it would have to save an extra £2.7m after re-estimating its 2012/2013 budgets.
