A man has died the night before he was due in court charged with murdering his 70-year-old neighbour on Boxing Day.

Jeffrey Burton, 60, was accused of killing Harry Tindall in Rainworth and was due to enter his plea at Nottingham Crown Court.

He died shortly before 23:30 GMT on Tuesday while in prison custody at Nottingham City Hospital, police said.

Mr Burton had been suffering from a terminal illness and his death was not unexpected.

Harry Tindall, also known as Ray, was found collapsed in Pearl Close where both men lived, at around midday on 26 December.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. A post-mortem examination found the cause of his death was a stab wound to the chest.

Nottinghamshire Police said no further action was being taken against a 54-year-old woman who was arrested and bailed in connection with the incident.

Both families have been informed of Mr Burton's death.
