Nottinghamshire gardener grows world's heaviest potato

A potato grown by an amateur gardener in Nottinghamshire has been confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's heaviest.

The 11lb (4.99kg) spud was grown by Peter Glazebrook in his garden at Halam, near Newark in Nottinghamshire.

The previous record of 8lb 4oz (3.8kg) was also held by Mr Glazebrook, who has been growing giant vegetables for more than 10 years.

He said his success was down to a lot of care and attention.

"I only grew nine plants so I could concentrate on those nine. That's the secret, just concentrate on a few and give them a long growing season," said Mr Glazebrook.

The keen vegetable grower said his passion for "monsters" came from trying to win prizes at his local garden show in Southwell.

"If you are showing exhibition vegetables you may win one year but it is difficult to improve on that next year," he said.

"But with giant vegetables you can always grow them bigger. It's always a challenge."

Mr Glazebrook has held many world records, including "the longest beetroot" and "the heaviest parsnip".

He said the world record potato would be admired for a while but admitted it might be eaten at a later date.
