Police watchdog investigates death of Newark woman

Denise Skilbeck Ms Skilbeck died from a head injury

The police watchdog is to investigate contact between Nottinghamshire Police and a 31-year-old woman prior to her being found dead at her home.

Denise Skilbeck, originally from Oxfordshire, was found dead at a house in The Wharf area of Newark on 16 March. A post-mortem examination found she died from a head injury.

Police had contact with Ms Skilbeck for three years relating to "a number of domestic incidents" before she died, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said.

Gary Spalding, 34, has been charged with her murder and remanded in custody to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 24 June.

An Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) spokesman said: "Nottinghamshire Police referred the death to the IPCC on March 17, 2011, because of prior police contact with the woman.

"The police contact dates between May 2008 and March 13, 2011 and relates to a number of domestic incidents.

"After assessment the IPCC has decided to begin an independent investigation."

He said Ms Skilbeck's family had been informed of the IPCC's involvement.
