A man who tried to run away from a court while being escorted to cells has been given a suspended jail sentence.

Peter Stearnes, of Gladstone Road, Northampton, was at the town's crown court in February, charged with dangerous driving.

He was quickly captured as he ran into the dock of another courtroom, where four suspects were standing trial.

Stearnes, 30, admitted the original dangerous driving charge and one of attempted escape.

He was given a 10 month jail sentence for the driving offence and five months for the attempted escape, both suspended for 18 months.

Stearnes was also banned from driving for a year.

Police said nobody was injured during the attempted escape.
