Daventry Working Men's Club secretary stole £135,000

A 67-year-old man has admitted stealing £135,000 from a working men's club while working as its secretary.

John Buckley was a bank manager before he took up the position at Daventry Working Men's Club in Northamptonshire.

Members became suspicious when Buckley kept delaying the club's annual general meeting, where he was to give details of the accounts.

Buckley, who is from Daventry, will be sentenced at Northampton Crown Court in July.

Magistrates in Northampton heard how Buckley blamed accountants and auditors for delaying the AGM.

He admitted taking the money between 1 January 2010 and 31 January 2012 when challenged by club members.
