Northamptonshire council workers get first pay rise since 2009

Council staff employed in east Northamptonshire are to be offered a 1% pay rise - their first cost of living increase since 2009.
The proposal was approved "in order to ensure the council can successfully recruit and retain knowledgeable and skilful employees".
Executive director of the Conservative council, Sharn Matthews, said it would equate to £250 for a "typical member".
Unison said it was "a decent gesture, acknowledging staff sacrifices".
Ms Matthews said: "The majority of staff haven't had a pay rise for four years, despite everyone knowing the cost of living is going up.
"Councillors felt it was appropriate to help staff by giving them certainty about their pay rise this year."
She said she thought it unlikely the offer would be refused "in the currently climate and given our limited resources".
The increase will cost the council £61,000.
"We have budgeted that amount and we can pay that this year without any additional burden on taxpayers," Ms Matthews added.
Palden Dorje, Unison's branch secretary for east Northamptonshire, said: "Staff have co-operated and accepted cuts to benefits over the past years.
"This is an acknowledgement of that, and their loyalty. It is decent enough, but obviously it is dependent on us not suffering further cuts at a later date."
