M1 Northamptonshire fatal crash: Man arrested

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a crash that killed a woman on the M1 in Northamptonshire.

The woman was a passenger in a silver Mercedes car which was in collision with a white Mercedes van.

The crash happened at 13:20 GMT between Junctions 17 and 16, near the Watford Gap services, leaving the southbound carriageway gridlocked.

The van driver, a 30-year-old from Reading, is in custody in Northampton.

A man and a woman, who were in the same car as the victim, have been taken to Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry with critical injuries.

The northbound carriageway of the M1 remained open and motorists were being advised to avoid the area.
