Plans for a 550-berth marina in Northamptonshire will cause congestion, a commercial rival has claimed.

The development will take place at the 90-acre Barby Pool Marina at Onley Park, near Daventry.

Developers J Marine Ltd said there was a need for high quality marina berths on the UK's waterways.

Tim Coghlan, who heads the 250-berth Braunston Marina four miles away from Barby Pool, claimed there were 100 empty berths within 15 miles of Onley.

"There are too many marinas in the central Midland area which is causing miles of congestion," he said.

"We are arguing that any new marina should be put places where there is a limited supply of marinas like the southern Grand Union Canal or Southern Oxford," he added>

J Marine Ltd has so far been unavailable for comment.

In the planning application submitted to both Daventry District and Rugby Borough Council, it said facilities for waterways users were variable in terms of availability and quality.

Daventry District Council is currently holding a public consultation about the plans until 3 August.
