Man held after eight-hour rooftop siege in Northampton

Armed officers and dog teams were called in as negotiations began

A 21-year-old man has been arrested after an eight-hour siege involving armed police in Northampton.

The man surrendered to police in the early hours after an incident in Cowper Street off Kettering Road, a mile from the town centre.

Police were called on Saturday at about 20:30 GMT, following reports a man had climbed on a roof.

The suspect was wanted by police in Manchester, where he has been transferred and is in custody.

During the stand-off, in which no-one was hurt, part of Kettering Road and a number of nearby streets were closed off and the police helicopter called.

Roads that were closed as a precaution from 16:00 GMT on Saturday were reopened after 12 hours.

Northamptonshire Police said: "The area was cordoned off and a small number of people evacuated.

"During this process the individual climbed onto the roof of the premises and refused to come down.

"Firearms and police dog teams, police negotiators, fire and ambulance were all deployed with the aim of bringing the individual down safely and securely."
