A new bus station in Northampton could receive £3m from the council

The bus station will be relocated to the Fishmarket in Northampton

Plans to spend £3m to support the cost of a new bus station in Northampton will be considered by the borough council this week.

The cash would add to the £8m already earmarked for the project by the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC).

The station would to be built on the Fishmarket site in the town with the Grayfriars Bus depot closing.

Councillors supporting the scheme say the extra funding is necessary.

David Mackintosh, leader of the borough council, said: "We will be discussing how this additional contribution from the borough council could make all the difference in not just providing something that is acceptable but something that will make a real difference in improving our town for residents and visitors alike."

'Safe and clean'

The project is being delivered by Northampton Borough Council, Northamptonshire County Council and WNDC. Those behind the scheme say it would be more attractive and cheaper to run that the current station.

Mr Mackintosh added: "Our intention is to create a modern new site that that is welcoming, bright, safe and clean and brings passengers right into the heart of our town.

"This will replace the existing Greyfriars Bus Depot that costs taxpayers almost half-a-million pounds a year to maintain."

The discussions will be held at the Guildhall on Wednesday.
