Players at King's Lynn Town FC are to be honoured at a civic reception to celebrate winning promotion to the eighth tier of English football.

The Linnets won the Evo-Stick Northern League Division One South at the first time of asking, making it two promotions since they reformed in 2010.

The club was wound up at the High Court in 2009 after accumulating more than £65,000 in unpaid taxes.

The reception will be held at the town hall on Tuesday.

Town mayor Elizabeth Watson said the reception was to recognise their "outstanding achievements".

"As a borough we have enjoyed their fabulous football and I have been impressed by their team work and absolute dedication," she said.

'Source of pride'

"To celebrate the success I have invited members of the football club to my parlour to recognise and pay tribute to their outstanding achievements."

The club was given a fresh start in 2010 after Keith Chapman, promoter of the King's Lynn Stars speedway team, took over the lease of The Walks stadium.

Nick Daubney, leader of King's Lynn Borough Council, paid tribute to the team, saying securing two successive promotions was "no mean feat".

"The club's success and the dedication and skill that has allowed them to achieve is a great boost for grassroots football and a source of pride for the whole town," Mr Daubney said.
