More than 300 schools shut as snow hits Norfolk

The 57 gritters from seven depots have been covering 2000 miles of road

More than 300 schools closed in Norfolk on Friday after further snow hit the county.

Rail services were also affected by the weather, with Greater Anglia trains between Norfolk and London subject to delays and cancellation.

Norwich Airport was closed for a short time and when it reopened passengers boarded delayed flights but some have been cancelled.

Anglian Buses did not run services and First buses only stopped on main roads.

Train company Greater Anglia said there were speed restrictions on many of its lines because of concerns snow falling off carriages at high speed could damage motors, track equipment and signals.

The company planned to run trains on all routes and to provide a full timetabled service on the majority of lines.

There were delays on East Midlands train services between Norwich and Ely.

Graham Plant, Norfolk County Council's cabinet member for planning and transportation, urged drivers to make only unavoidable journeys.

The A47 was closed in both directions at Tuns Road, in Necton for most of the morning, after a lorry left the road and went into a ditch.

Meanwhile, footage on video sharing website YouTube, posted on Thursday, showed people slipping and sliding in icy conditions in Duke Street, Norfolk.

Newsagents said the snow had little effect on the services they provided, although most deliveries were later than usual.

Gina Long, early morning manager at Edwards in Thetford, said: "We have about 40 boys, girls and older people who deliver papers here and to the outlying villages.

"Bless them, they're all turning up."

Footage was recorded showing pedestrians grappling with icy conditions in Duke Street, Norwich

Her 14-year-old daughter, Tiffany, delivers papers in the town every morning from Monday to Saturday.

She said the snow had added about half an hour to her route.

"I deliver to more than 50 houses and I've had to walk instead of use my bike this week.

"It's been absolutely freezing, and you just can't get warm," she added.
