Norfolk-based RAF Afghanistan crews raise £45,000 for charities

Flight crews and engineers from a Norfolk-based RAF squadron have raised £45,000 for charity by running, cycling and rowing 56,000 miles while stationed in Afghanistan.

Members of 31 Squadron, known as the Goldstars, based at RAF Marham, returned from four months based at Kandahar airfield earlier this year.

The money is going to Help for Heroes, Tickets for Troops and Epilepsy Action.

It is thought to be the largest amount raised by UK forces in a warzone.

A spokesman for the fundraisers said: "All members of the squadron took part in the challenge adding their mileage to the grand total.

"The challenge included the squadron competing in their own version of the Great North Run in Kandahar, running in temperatures of over 30 degrees."

Although units have raised more money while on home soil, this is thought to be the largest amount raised by a signal unit while deployed to a warzone.
