Almost 650 affordable homes will be built in Liverpool in the next four years after the city council secured £14m of government funding.

The money, from the Homes and Community Agency, has been given to four of the city's housing associations.

They will build 646 homes, with 566 becoming rental properties and 80 being subject to shared ownership.

Councillor Ann O'Byrne said "as much of the construction work as possible [would benefit] local people".

Liverpool Mutual Homes will build 313 homes, Riverside 186, Plus Dane 96 and Liverpool Housing Trust 51.

They will be a mix of two, three and four-bedroom houses and one and two-bedroom flats.

Ms O'Byrne said the council was "working closely with our housing associations to make sure the properties are built in the right places to meet the demand in the local area".

The scheme is part of a £200m plan the council announced in June to create 2,500 homes.

It will see a council-appointed consortium build 1,500 new homes and bring 1,000 properties back into use.
