Five charged with fraud in Wirral 'cash-for-crash' probe

Three women and two men have been charged as part of an investigation into staged car crashes and fake insurance claims in Wirral.

Lisa Dos Santos, 31, of Craven Street and Maria Jacob, 39, of Hartington Ave, Birkenhead are accused of fraud.

Michael Maguire, 41, of Hoblyn Road and Maria Jacob, 59, of Harthill Mews, Prenton, along with Craig Lynch, 28, of Ford Road, Wirral face the same charge.

They were bailed to appear at Wirral Magistrates' Court on 12 September.

All five were arrested in connection with an alleged staged crash in Wallasey in March 2013.

    A 72-year-old woman died shortly after the van she was driving was involved in a crash with two cars in Southport.

    The accident happened at the junction of Cemetery Road and Duke Street at about 08:50 GMT.

    Police were called after the victim's Ford Transit collided with a Ford Kuga and a Jaguar S-Type car. She was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

    A 45-year-old man is wanted by police in connection with a number of distraction burglaries in Sefton.

    Michael McDonough, 45, is described as white, 5ft 7in tall and of a slim build with shaven ginger hair and blue eyes.

    Police said he has an Irish accent and is believed to have links to Bootle and Toxteth.

    A seal has been found in the middle of a field in Merseyside.

    Steve Marsh from British Divers Marine Life Rescue, has said the plan is to get it into a crate and take it to the River Mersey.

    "It's not an easy job certainly because they are large animals, they can be quite aggressive and we do have people in our charity that can actually handle those large seals, but in this instance we are probably going to have to be using the fire brigade to help out," he said.
