The death of a man who was found unconscious in a Merseyside street is being treated as murder, police have said.

Police found the 33-year-old in Melling Avenue, near Aintree Racecourse, at about midnight on Tuesday.

He was taken to hospital for treatment but later died.

Merseyside Police said the man was believed to have been "involved in an argument with three other men, which culminated in him being assaulted".

A post-mortem examination to establish the cause of the man's death is due to take place.

Det Ch Insp Andy O'Connor said it was "a deeply shocking thing to happen in this community".

"A man has lost his life in violent circumstances and it is imperative that the offenders are brought to justice.

"At this stage, we do not have a motive for the attack, but we do believe that the victim was targeted and could possibly have known the offenders."
